What’s the difference between Alloy and Steel wheels?
While steel wheels are obviously made from heavy-duty steel, alloy wheels are made from aluminum, or a blend of aluminum, magnesium, and nickel. As a result of being made from light materials, alloy wheels are much lighter than steel wheels. Aluminum alloy wheels also look nicer. They are more “striking” and because of their molding process, they can feature more intricate and custom designs. They shine better than heavy-duty steel wheels and provide an aesthetic upgrade.
Do Alloy wheels drive any better?
Lighter wheels like alloy wheels can increase fuel efficiency by keeping your vehicle’s weight down and offer performance benefits such as quicker acceleration and deceleration power. Additionally, the mainly-aluminum makeup of alloy wheels improves the wheel’s ability to dissipate heat away from the brakes.
What are the disadvantages of Alloy wheels?
While alloy wheels look nicer than and generally outperform steel wheels, there are some disadvantages. The lower weight of the tire does leave alloy wheels more vulnerable to bending or cracking. And because alloy wheels are more striking and attractive, even small scratches and blemishes are quite noticeable. Because alloy wheels are more “fragile,” some drivers prefer to use steel wheels during months when harsh conditions can cause more blemishes.
