What is a Jeep Trailhawk?

Jeep is a brand that stands for power, off-roading prowess, and a lasting commitment to an American icon, but what is a Jeep Trailhawk? You’ve probably seen the name thrown around in Jeep circles. Maybe you have even seen a Trailhawk in person at your local Jeep dealer. The truth of these Trailhawk models is more than just a name.

What does Trailhawk mean?

The name was originally used on a 2007 Jeep concept vehicle that was largely based on the Jeep Wrangler. It even had the removable roof of the Wrangler, a feature which is still standard on the Wrangler and Wrangler Unlimited today. Though this model never came to fruition, you can see its lines and style reflected in many current Jeep models including the Jeep Cherokee and the new Jeep Compass.

Trailhawk is a Jeep trim level on many models that stands for the best of the best. It isn’t necessarily the most luxurious, or in many cases even the most expensive, but it is the most capable. The Trailhawk version typically gets the best engine, the best transmission, and a trail rated 4X4 drivetrain.

The special trim also includes many trim level exclusives like red tow hooks, special wheels, and stock all-terrain tires. These features can vary from model to model. Below you can see a list of all the Jeep models that include a Trailhawk version.

Excluded from the Trailhawk program, is the Jeep Patriot. The Patriot is really a sister vehicle to the Jeep Compass and slated for discontinuation for the 2017 model year to be replace solely by the current Compass model. This discontinuation may largely be the reason why the Patriot never received the Trailhawk treatment.

The other two models that are excluded from that list are the Wrangler and the Wrangler Unlimited. Their exclusion is not by accident. The Wrangler lineup already has the equivalent of a Trailhawk version, and that is known as the Rubicon. With much more history and prestige to the Rubicon name, it’s only right that the Wrangler retains this trim over the Trailhawk.

The decision to use Trailhawk instead of Rubicon on other Jeep models is likely to keep in place the brand currency that Rubicon has already earned with the Wrangler. Though if you are looking for a short-hand, you can consider Trailhawk to be the Rubicon version for the rest of the Jeep lineup.
